What is a Urinary Tract Infection?
Urine is a natural disinfectant, releasing from our bodies bacteria
and toxic wastes. Urine eliminates waste products, but retains
nutrients needed by the body. When bacteria is introduced into
the urinary tract, infections can occur. Urinary tract Infections
are known medically as cystitis and affect the lower urinary tract
(bladder and urethra). Symptoms of urinary tract infections are
frequent urination, pain and burning upon urination, burning,
pressure or pain in lower back.
Who Suffers From Urinary Tract Infections?
Women tend to have urinary tract infections more often than men.
One factor is that the urethra is shorter in females than males,
and is closer to bacteria from the vagina and rectum (urine itself
does not carry bacteria). Another factor is that more women tend
to have jobs where it is not easy to frequent the restroom (i.e.,
retail salespeople, bank tellers, receptionists, farm workers,
etc.) making it necessary to hold the bladder for longer periods
of time. Some forms of birth control, such as some spermicides,
also can contribute to urinary tract infections. Oddly enough,
women with large bladders tend to have urinary tract infections
more often because the bladder can hold more urine, leading to
a buildup of wastes that need to exit the body. Men who cannot
void easily and often such as truck and bus drivers, also are
prone to urinary tract infections for the same reasons.
How Do You Cure Urinary Tract Infections?
Most urinary tract infections are easy to treat. Cystitis, the
most common form, can determined by an at-home urinary tract infection
kit. Treatment can include an over the counter antibacterial and
analgesic, which includes methenamine and sodium salicylate. Also
plenty of water, with cranberry juice, or a cranberry fruit extract
can help alleviate the symptoms.
Most urinary tract infections can be prevented by following
these simple steps;
Drink plenty of fluids
Do not hold urine longer than absolutely necessary
When using the bathroom, wipe from front to back
During your menstrual cycle, change your pad often to prevent
the buildup of bacteria
Supplements such as Vitamin C and Cranberry extract can help prevent
urinary tract infections.
However, there can be other forms of Urinary Tract Infections
that can be more serious such as urethritis and nephritis. Symptom
of these include blood in the urine, and a fever of over 100 degrees.
If a urinary tract infection lasts more than two days, accompanied
by the above symptoms, please see a doctor.
